An incredible Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, not only the flagship of Banfi’s production, but also the result of an adventure that began in 1985 with an extraordinary harvest.

THE ICON

Forty years ago, with the extraordinary 1985 harvest—one of the finest ever in Montalcino—the adventure of this incredible Brunello di Montalcino Riserva began: Poggio all’Oro, a true gem within Banfi’s production. A wine that does not chase time, but carves it: bottle after bottle, season after season.

THE VINEYARD

In the heart of Banfi’s vineyards in Montalcino, at an altitude of 250 meters above sea level, lies the “Poggio all’Oro” vineyard, set on a broad natural terrace facing northwest. Here, only in truly extraordinary vintages, this Brunello Riserva is born. Every row is the result of meticulous selection, every cluster awaited with patience. After a long maturation in the cellar, a Brunello comes to life that defies time, combining power and finesse, depth and grace. Poggio all’Oro is the most complete expression of our vision of Sangiovese: a wine that tells the strength of Montalcino’s land with elegance and authenticity.

SOILS

Poggio all’Oro was the first vineyard planted by Banfi on the site of a pre-existing vine, the result of a careful selection of the finest Sangiovese rootstocks found in the Montalcino area. A vineyard that tells a story of precision and respect: cultivated with bush-trained and cordon-trained systems, it counts 5,100 vines per hectare and was planted in 1979, combining the strength of youth with the balance of maturity.

From a geological perspective, the Poggio all’Oro vineyard is characterized by an intriguing heterogeneity of soils, traceable to four main pedoclimatic subzones. In this unique terroir, it yields Sangiovese grapes capable of expressing power, elegance, and longevity.

SOIL 1

It features a loam-clay texture, with a balanced content of sand, clay, and silt; the presence of stones is abundant.

SOIL 2

It has a clay-loam texture, with a medium content of sand, clay, and silt; the skeleton is frequent and dark in color.

SOIL 3

It has a clay-loam texture, with a higher clay and silt content than the other soils; the skeleton is frequent but in smaller quantities.

SOIL 4

It has a sandy clay-loam texture, with a higher sand content compared to silt and clay; the skeleton, darker in color than the others, is frequent.
